Leon Roulette

Leon Roulette, as a child, always had a love for the great outdoors and became interested in painting at a very early age. These two elements combined to give rise to the extraordinary and vibrant artist that he is today. His work is reminiscent of the romantic landscape painters of the 18th and 19th Century.

Not surprisingly, Leon’s successes as a painter have grown out of his personal love of natural beauty. As a painter, he values directness and spontaneity. Working with a pallet knife and brush, he approaches the canvas with passion and intensity in an effort to convey his vibrant sense of light. Roulette believes that he is a successful painter when he has “Captured the essence of sunlight in my work”. Given that fact, it becomes clear in examining his career that the majority of his works depict a “particular time of day”. It may be dawn, high noon, or dusk, but the sun always makes its presence known.

Leon attains mystic intimacy with the subjects of his paintings, whether it be a remote windswept mountain range in Alaska, the picturesque Spanish Missions of California, a panorama of the French or Italian Riviera, or the baroque and rococo style architecture of Venice. Roulette’s translation of these vistas onto canvas gives the viewer a visual feast of the beauty and the wonder that is Nature. Born December 11, 1959, and raised in Southern California, Leon began studying art as a child through private instruction and obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in fine art at California State University of Long Beach. His studies included historical and classical fine art as well as the theory of architecture and design. Early in his career he spent a number of years as an art instructor in Southern California.

During the 80's Leon Roulette served as Art Director for a prominent art studio. He designed and created serigraphic works for important clients such as Walt Disney Studios, Universal Pictures, and Warner Bros. Productions. It was during this period that he worked on projects with many world renowned illustration artists from the motion picture industry such as Robert Peak, Bernie Fuchs, and Eyvind Earle. Leon Roulette is an active member of the Plein Air Painters of the Northwest, and is presently completing a comprehensive series of paintings dedicated to what he calls the 'Romantic Missions of California'.
