Jia Lu was born in 1954 in Beijing, China, where she worked as a nurse, an actress, a Navy officer, an art editor and as a professional basketball trainee before enrolling in the Central Academy of Art and Design to begin her professional training as an artist. Jia Lu was already an accomplished figure painter in Chinese media when she left China for Canada in 1983. It was while working as a research assistant in the Faculty of Visual Arts at York University that she was first exposed to Western psychological approaches to the human figure. She subsequently taught art in Toronto and Calgary.
A journey to Europe in 1995 brought her in direct contact with the masterpieces of European art, prompting her to switch from Chinese ink to oil painting and inspiring her mature work. Jia Lu has also worked as Chief Designer of the Tang Garden Museum in Tokyo, and as consulting designer for a stage production in a joint venture between Pierre Cardin and the Chinese Ministry of Textiles in Beijing.
Her work may be found in public, corporate and private collections. Important collectors include President Jacques Chirac of France, Michael Wilson, former Finance Minister of Canada and international billionaire George Soros. Corporate collectors include the Bank of China, Boeing Corporation and Morgan Stanley.
